Shape up before shooting

By LARRY WOODY

Call it turkey training.

After hibernating over the winter, thousands of hunters will suit up and start hiking over rugged hills and distant fields when turkey season opens.

Laden with guns and gear, that sudden burst of physical exertion can be dangerous, warns the National Wild Turkey Federation. More than 910,000 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each year and one of the causes of a stroke or heart attack is sudden increased physical activity.

The NWFT strongly recommends that hunters shape up with a preseason training regimen, matching that training to actual hunting conditions.

For example, if you have to make a brisk one-mile pre-dawn walk to where you hunt, make a series of similar brisk one-mile marches prior to the season. If you have to climb a mountain to hunt, make several climbs before the season opens.

"Being in shape makes you a better hunter," said Nashville guide Barry Stricklin, who jogs and plays basketball to keep in shape over the winter.

"The places where I turkey hunt are pretty rugged and I do a lot of walking — probably more than most hunters. I call it 'sneaking and peeking' — moving around from one position to another. In an average day's hunt from dawn to sunset I'll probably walk 4 miles. That much walking, in rough terrain and loaded down with gear, can be pretty rough if you're not used to it."
